BOISE, ID – Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra is thrilled with Governor Otter’s budget recommendation for education. This continues the trajectory path for increased funding for Idaho’s students.
Ybarra is scheduled to make her proposed budget presentation to the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee (JFAC) on January 29, 2015. This request will include a shift in purpose from various non-discretionary categories to the Division of Operations, which gives more local control to the districts to allocate funds where they need it most. The Governor’s office and JFAC Co-Chairs have been made aware of these new recommendations.
The proposed budget recommends shifting $18.759 million dollars into the Division of Operations. The $18.759 million originated from various line items. A few examples include: $1.4 million from the Professional Development line item (PD360) and $904,000 from the Instructional Management System Maintenance line item.
“Administrators and Superintendents across Idaho have shared their needs and concerns during the listening tour for more control of operational monies to address their individual challenges,” said Ybarra. “Our new vision for the State Department of Education is to support schools and students to achieve. This is the foundation for everything we do and will be reflected in every decision we make, and every action we take.”
