Joint project helps students share and receive the spirit of Christmas
Rotarians and Interact students worked together again for the ROTARY HELPS project to help students in need, but with the added goal of bringing Christmas cheer as well.
The clubs worked together to obtain a wish list from the school district, raise funds, purchase the items on the list, wrap the gifts and deliver them to the schools.
“There were more than 300 items on the list,” said Pocatello Rotary Club President Saeid Rezaii, adding, “This was a large undertaking and required everyone’s help and support.”
The clubs raised over $3000 for the project, then several volunteers went shopping to purchase the listed items. Afterwards Century High School Interact Club hosted a wrapping party at the school which was attended by about 18 students and adults.
“We had a lot of fun and it felt good to work with the Rotary Clubs on such a worthwhile project. It seemed like we wrapped a ton of gifts,” said Century Interact Club President Angela Forhan.
Rotary International is a service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Interact Clubs are Rotary- sponsored clubs for youth ages 12-18.
ROTARY HELPS is the only continuing project supported jointly by all the Pocatello Rotary and Interact clubs. Adult and children’s clothes, household items and small appliances, baby clothes and products and even adult professional clothes are collected at any time. Most of the children’s clothing is donated to the school district to help meet the basic needs of underprivileged students and reduce distractions to learning. Clothing and household items are donated to Bannock Youth Foundation and Aid for Friends to help teens and adults establish a place to live independently and to help young parents struggling to raise their children. Professional clothing is used to help individuals with job interviews.
