Last week in his press conference, Governor Otter recognized the self-inflicted problem of child support enforcement caused by the House killing S1067, and failing to consider an alternative.
House Minority Leader John Rusche today called on Governor Otter to quit temporizing and call the Special Session. “That is what is needed to cure the Child Support Enforcement problem handed the families of Idaho by the House last weekend,” said Rusche. Letting the action that will cost the State $46 million and disrupt payments to 155,000 kids stand is cruel and indefensible.”
It is true that the Governor did not cause the problem, the House Republican leadership and especially the 9 Judiciary and Rules Committee members did. “They let paranoia and misunderstanding drive their votes rather than the best interests of Idaho and Idaho families”, added Rusche. “They listened to the Idaho Freedom Foundation and the John Birch Society fringe groups rather than legal experts, child support specialists, and their constituents.”
We can only hope that the uncertainty and fear that the House GOP has saddled on the kids and families of Idaho is addressed soon. Please, Governor, do what is right and necessary. Call the Legislature back.
